Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Comments on the Visit by Taiwan's "Army Commander" to Japan

2006/08/28

Q: Japanese media reported that Taiwan's "army commander in chief" Hu Chen-pu visited Japan in the name of "sightseeing" and observed the live-fire drill conducted by Japan's Ground Self Defense Forces on August 24. What's your comment?

A: The Japanese government's permission to Hu Chen-pu's visit constitutes a grave event in China-Japan relations. China has already lodged strong protest against Japan's blatant violation of the related principles and its commitments in the three Sino-Japanese political documents. We strongly urge the Japanese government to take concrete actions to honor its one-China position and treat seriously China's solemn stance and grave concerns so as to prevent the reoccurrence of such incidents.
