Strengthened China and South Africa Ties Amid COVID-19

The Chinese PLA and SANDF held a video conference with each other on Friday morning, May 8. Military medical experts from both sides had a fruitful exchange about information and practices relating to COVID-19. Seven Chinese military medical experts and some officers from the Medical Service Directorate of the Logistic Support Department, CMC, have shared their experience on subjects such as Treatment of COVID-19 patients and Analysis of Important Cases, Management and Control of COVID-19 in Hospitals, and COVID-19 Testing Technology and Methods. And Both sides have also talked about the vaccine development, asymptomatic patients examination, the anti-COVID19 medication, the usage and sensitivity of the testing kits, disinfecting materials and so on. All the Chinese experts and officers have just accomplished their Anti-COVID19 operations in Wuhan, so they well provided information, experience and suggestion for SANDF's anti-COVID19 operations.


On behalf of Chief of SANDF General Solly Shoke, Lt. Gen. Yam, Chief of Staff, was present the meeting and expressed his appreciation to the Chinese experts for sharing the precious experience and also for the PLA's support amid COVID-19 by PPE provision and so on. Surgeon General Dabula said that the Chinese solution against COVID-19 was meaningful to SANDF and the PLA and SANDF should keep close contacts by such kinds of communications and fight against COVID-19 with joint efforts. The military experts and doctors from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd SANDF military hospitals attended the online meeting and had fruitful discussions with their counterparts.

Major Gen. Shang Hong, the Chinese Defence Attache in South Africa, mentioned in the meeting, "The virus respects no borders and nationalities. Solidarity and cooperation are the most powerful weapons to overcome the COVID-19 for the international community. Now the epidemic situation in South Africa is becoming serious and posing a grave threat to people's live and health. China will firmly support South Africa's effort in fighting COVID-19, and is prepared to help where we can. And we believe under the decisive leadership of South African government and with great efforts of SANDF, South Africa will soon walk out the haze of pandemic, and shining again as the beautiful rainbow nation".

South Africa and China have forged strong bilateral defense and security ties over past years by implementing mutual visits, personnel training, joint exercises, defense industrial cooperation and so on. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the SANDF and Chinese PLA have had close cooperation on PPE provision, South African citizens repatriation, and virus control and treatment measures sharing. Regarding the anti-COVID19 experience sharing, it is the first time for the Chinese PLA hold such a kind of video conference with African countries. And all of them build on strong ties of partnership and friendship. The two militaries will further develop partnership amid COVID-19 especially in the military medical area to make sure both SANDF and PLA are able to contribute more to respective nation's efforts to control the virus.
