Wang Yi: "BRICS Plus" Pattern to Fully Release Vitality of BRICS Cooperation
2017/09/02

On August 30, 2017, when responding to questions from the journalists at the briefing for China and Foreign media held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Ninth BRICS Summit and Dialogue between Emerging Market Economies and Developing Countries, Foreign Minister Wang Yi noted that BRICS is not a locked club and the influence of BRICS cooperation goes far beyond the borders of the five countries. The BRICS mechanism has not only become an important platform for emerging markets and developing countries to strengthen solidarity and cooperation and to safeguard common interests, but also played an increasingly crucial role in promoting international peace and development. BRICS countries are always upholding the concept of openness. One of the useful experiences so far is to conduct dialogues and cooperation with other emerging markets and developing countries. Since 2013, the host country of the BRICS Summit has started to invite some non-BRICS countries to the meeting for dialogue and exchanges.

Wang Yi noted that this year, China has summed up its successful practices in the past and summarized and put forward the "BRICS Plus" pattern, which has gained widespread support among many emerging markets and developing countries since it was put forward. The idea of the "BRICS Plus" pattern is "openness, inclusiveness, cooperation and mutual benefits", which is highly consistent with the BRICS spirit. The purpose of the "BRICS Plus" pattern is to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between BRICS countries and other emerging markets and developing countries, promote the establishment of broader partnerships and facilitate common development and prosperity on a larger scale.

Wang Yi said that China will, based on the idea of the "BRICS Plus" pattern and the practices inherited from the experience in the past, hold the Dialogue Between Emerging Market Economies and Developing Countries on the sidelines of the meeting in Xiamen. We have invited five state leaders to jointly discuss the undertakings of South-South cooperation and the international development and cooperation. Those leaders come from different regions respectively with their own characteristics, showing that this dialogue is of broader representativeness. I believe the "BRICS Plus" pattern will fully release the vitality of BRICS cooperation, continually expand the influence of BRICS cooperation and inject more "positive energy" into the undertakings of advancing world economic growth, improving global governance and promoting democracy in international relations.
