Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane on Thursday praised President Jacob Zuma for using the fifthBrazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (Brics) Summit to align Africa with its powerful countries.
At a Pretoria press conference she highlighted the outcomes of the eThekwini Declaration.
A Brics leaders' Africa dialogue ran parallel to the summit to promote Africa-Brics' discussion.
"The Brics' leaders have undertaken to take their cooperation forward to support Africa's efforts to accelerate the diversification and modernisation of its economies through infrastructure development, knowledge exchange and support for increased access to technology, enhanced capacity-building and investment in human capital, within the framework of the AU and New Economic Partnership for Africa's Development," she said.
Nkoana-Mashabane pointed out strides which had been made as "human rights and gender" were for the first time included in the summit outcomes.
She said the proposed New Development Bank and $100bn (R930bn) reserve would help "Brics strengthen financial stability". The Brics' chairpersonship was ceded to South Africa for a 12 month tenure.
"Brics reaffirmed their support for sustainable development, as well as industrial development, job creation, skills development, food and nutrition security and poverty eradication and development in Africa.
"Brics leaders expressed commitment to peace and security in Africa. The leaders called on the UN to enhance cooperation with the AU, and its Peace and Security Council, pursuant to UN Security Council resolutions."
