The Special Representative of the Chinese Government to Darfur Accepts the Interview with Reuters
2007/06/07

On June 7, 2007, Liu Guijin, the Special Representative of the Chinese Government to Darfur accepted an exclusive interview with Reuters, expounding the positions and views of the Chinese government on the Darfur issue and the efforts made by China toward the proper settlement of the issue. Liu stressed that the Darfur issue boils down to a development issue. Realizing the economic restructuring and development of Darfur is the only way out. Liu called on the international society to make concerted efforts to implement the three-phase peacekeeping plan put forward by Kofi Annan through dialogues and consultations on an equal footing, promote the political process and peacekeeping operations in Darfur in a balanced manner, keep improving the humanitarian and security situation in Darfur and move toward the political settlement of the issue. On conditions that positive headway has been achieved, imposing new sanctions on Sudan would only complicate the issue and was not helpful for resolving the issue. China attaches importance to the Darfur issue and is devoted to playing a constructive role. The relationship between Sudan and China is a type of normal state-to-state relationship. The cooperation between Sudan and China is based on mutual interest and benefit and such cooperation is helpful for the improvement of the local peoples lives. Associating the position of the Chinese government on Darfur with Beijing Olympic Games is unreasonable and irresponsible. It runs against the universally accepted principle of non-politicalization of sport and the spirit of the Olympic Games.
